Ebrima Danso’s story is one of resilience, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to improving lives through science. Growing up in The Gambia, Ebrima was captivated by the revered physicians in his community, their stethoscopes symbolizing hope and healing. As a young dreamer with a passion for science, he envisioned a career in medicine, but financial barriers and limited scholarships after high school made that path seem out of reach. Yet, Ebrima’s determination refused to waver, setting the stage for an extraordinary journey.
His transformative moment came when he joined the Medical Research Council Unit, The Gambia, as a laboratory technician at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. There, while earning his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science, Ebrima discovered the vital role of medical laboratory science in patient care. “I realized that laboratory test results influence about 70% of clinical decisions—diagnosis, treatment, and discharge planning,” he reflected. “Even without direct patient interaction, I could make a big impact by providing accurate results to guide clinicians.” This revelation ignited a passion for diagnostics that would shape his future.
Ebrima’s pursuit of excellence led him to PCOM Georgia’s Master’s in Medical Laboratory Science program, a choice driven by the school’s mission to address the growing need for healthcare professionals in Georgia and beyond. The program’s alignment with his values and roots in a medically underserved region made it a perfect fit. At PCOM Georgia, Ebrima shone brightly, earning induction into the Alpha Epsilon Lambda Graduate Honor Society for his academic prowess and leadership. As a student ambassador and peer mentor, he inspired others with his dedication and humility.
Mentors played a pivotal role in Ebrima’s journey. From the laboratory expertise of Mr. Karamo Camara and Mr. Musa Colley to the theoretical and practical guidance of Dr. Mustapha Bittaye and Dr. Alansana Darboe, each shaped his skills and deepened his love for science. Under Professor Andrew Prentice’s leadership, Ebrima had the privilege of meeting globally renowned scientists, including Professor Peter Piot, co-discoverer of the Ebola virus. “Their work motivates me to push boundaries,” Ebrima said, his eyes alight with purpose.
Ebrima likens medical laboratory scientists to “FBI agents of the medical world,” investigating diseases through blood and tissue samples to provide clinicians with critical insights. “It’s a noble profession,” he said proudly. His immediate goal is to earn his MLS certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology within months. Looking ahead, he aspires to work as a medical laboratory scientist and lecturer, shaping future professionals while advancing the field globally.
As the only member of his immediate family to pursue a Western education, Ebrima credits his eldest brother’s unwavering support for making his journey possible. From the challenges of his Gambian roots to the halls of PCOM Georgia, Ebrima’s path exemplifies perseverance and a passion for service. “I want to contribute to organizations advancing medical laboratory science worldwide,” he said, his vision as bold as his journey. Ebrima Danso is not just a scientist; he’s a beacon of hope, proving that with dedication and curiosity, dreams can become reality.
